Alvaro Joaquim Melo Siza Vieira was born in Matosinhos, Portugal, in 1933. He studied at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes in Porto between 1949 and 1955, finishing his first work in 1954.
During the years 1955 to 1958 he collaborated in the office of the architect Fernando Távora. He taught classes at the Porto School of Architecture (ESBAP) between 1966 and 1969, and rejoined in 1976 as Assistant Professor of Construction. He has been a visiting professor at the Polytechnic School of Lausanne, at the University of Pennsylvania, at the University of Los Andes in Bogotá, and at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University as 'Kenzo Tange Visiting Professor'. He has also taught at the Faculty of Architecture of Porto, where he taught his last class in October 2003.
He practices his profession in the city of Porto, and is the author of numerous projects in Portugal, Spain, France, Holland, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Brazil, the United States, Mexico, South Korea and China. He has been recognized as Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Valencia, Spain (1992); by the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne, Switzerland (1993); by the University of Palermo, Italy (1995); by the Menéndez Pelayo University of Santander, Spain (1995); by the National University of Engineering of Lima, Peru (1995); by the University of Coimbra, Portugal (1997); by the University of Lusíada (1999); by the Federal University of Paraíba, Brazil (2000); by the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, Naples, Italy (2004); by the University of Architecture and Urban Planning of Bucharest 'Ion Mincu', Romania (2005); by the Universidade degli studi di Pavia, Italy (2007); by the Federal University of Pará, Brazil and the University of Palermo in Buenos Aires (2008); by the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon (2010); by the University of Seville and the University of Aveiro (2011); by the Milan Polytechnic (2012); by the University of Granada (2014); by the University of Évora (2015).
